Proton is a good free alternative though,it does allow you to use it for free without any data limit with only 3 locations and no p2p.Thats not good for torrenting of course and Mullvad is pretty cheap,but still there's probably a lot of people not willing to pay. Often times I have played entire gaming session of several hours without noticing that I was connected to a VPN. Generally it would be laggy and unreliable but Proton is very fast.
Good thing is it has no association with your computers (except for the sftp download) and runs 24/7 on a high bandwidth server, often 10G. So you can easily download over night as well. And it's pretty much needed for private trackers because you have to keep a good ratio.

If you have 20Mbps of bandwidth (like your speedtest seem to indicate), any of the paid ProtonVPN server (and most of the free, as you've noticed) will be able to provide you good performance. In general, users observe speed of more than a few hundred Mbps, so the limiting factor will be your connection.
